Spinal Decompression

Spinal Decompression patient

Back pain due to a herniated or bulging disc can be debilitating. In the past, injections, physical therapy or surgery were the only options for treatment. Today, we have a highly-successful advanced technology, called Intervertebral Disc Decompression (IDD) Therapy, that allows us to relieve neck or back pain in a new, non-surgical way. This treatment protocol was designed by a world renown neurosurgeon, Dr. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Shealy's protocol, utilizing the Accu-SPINA system, which delivers an exceptionally precise, computer-operated decompression program to reduce painful nerve pressure caused by bulging or herniated discs. The Accu-SPINA system has cutting-edge technology that leads the non-invasive, non-surgical, spinal decompression industry. Cleared through the FDA as a therapeutic device, Accu-SPINA has undergone stringent clinical trials and has published outcomes of up to 92% success in relief of painful symptoms. Using this technology, Dr. Shealy's protocol, and the Accu-SPINA decompression table, we are able to create a custom treatment plan that decompresses the spine and pulls the herniated or bulging material back into the disc.

Tired of living with chronic back and neck pain? Dr. Rodney Crews and the team at Crews Chiropractic in Shreveport, LA, offer spinal decompression and more to help.

Spinal Decompression and Its Role In Healing

Suffering in pain is no way to live, but neither is relying on pain medication or resorting to invasive techniques. Thanks to therapies like spinal decompression, you don’t have to choose any of those options. Instead, you can enjoy natural and lasting relief. Dr. Crews and the team at Crews Chiropractic in Shreveport, LA, explain spinal decompression and how it can help below.

The Basics of Spinal Decompression

Have you ever felt so much pain or tension in your back that you wish that somehow it could be completely stretched? That is what spinal decompression does. You lie on a table that has separate segments. One part of the table moves independently from the other.

As the segment under the lower half of your body moves slowly and gently, it provides a comprehensive stretch to the spinal column. This provides many different benefits, including the following.

Disc Healing

The discs between your vertebrae can become compressed due to poor posture, injuries, heavy lifting, and various other events and activities. As they do, they often tear, which allows the inner filling to spill out on surrounding spinal column components. Sometimes, discs wear out or dehydrate due to age, which can lead to the same tears.

In either event, spinal decompression can help undo the damage. As your spine is stretched, it causes a vacuum-like effect that pulls the inner filling and disc back into place. It also draws fluids to the disc, allowing it to be hydrated properly and plump back up.

Relief of Nerve Compression

Generally, when the inner filling spills out of a disc, it does so on top of a nerve. This not only leads to pain but can also cause numbness, muscle weakness, tingling, and more. As the vacuum-like effect pulls the discs and filling back into place, though, it naturally takes the pressure off of the nerve.

Tension Relief

Tension is a regular companion for many people, due to work, stress, or activities. Unfortunately, tension can restrict motion, cause pain, impede blood flow, and more. And regular stretching does not always relieve it. However, decompression therapy not only stretches the tense muscles but also pulls blood and healing nutrients to them. It also improves blood flow throughout the spinal column.

What does the treatment feel like?

During the treatment process, there are multiple cycles of stretch and relaxation of your spine specifically directed at the level of the bulge or herniation. In each cycle, you will feel a slow, gentle, pain-free stretch that reduces the disc compression against the spinal nerves. The stretch creates a vacuum-like effect that pulls the soft bulging disc material back into the disc. At the point of maximum stretch, there is an "oscillating effect" that is unique to the Accu-Spina device, enabling a "re-hydrating" or "re-vitalizing" effect, wherein, fluid, nutrients and oxygen are pulled into the disc from the surrounding tissues, improving the integrity of the disc itself. The final phase of each cycle is the relaxation phase. These gentle cycles are repeated multiple time during each 30-minute session.

Treatment time and frequency will depend on each patient’s unique condition; however, each spinal decompression treatment is usually about 30-minutes. Patient treatment plans do vary, but typically, patients are finished with treatment within eight weeks.
